Indian kitchens have always known something that modern research is now catching up to: certain boiled or infused waters carry real benefits during pregnancy. Ajwain water helps with gas, bloating, and digestion — common pregnancy discomforts. However, ajwain (carom seeds) in large quantities can stimulate uterine contractions. That said, some pregnant women find cold water triggers nausea, especially in the first trimester when morning sickness is strongest. The practice. Two or three thin slices of fresh ginger steeped in 300ml of warm water for five minutes, sipped slowly — kept beside the bed and taken before sitting up, when the nausea is at its worst. Multiple trials in early pregnancy have found ginger reduces the severity of nausea compared with placebo, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists lists it among the non-drug options for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy. The grandmothers were not guessing.

Before you start. The amounts studied are small — roughly a gram of fresh ginger a day, which is what a few slices in water gives you. Stay at food quantities and avoid concentrated ginger capsules, extracts and essential oils, which are a different thing entirely. Before you start. Build up over a week rather than drinking a litre on the first morning, and sip over ten minutes instead of gulping — a large fasted volume is uncomfortable on a pregnant stomach. Waking to urinate more often in pregnancy is normal and is not a reason to drink less.

The practice. The water of one fresh young coconut, daily, in the morning or mid-morning — opened in front of you rather than poured from a carton. Nariyal paani khoon badhata hai, they said. Coconut water builds the blood. In an Indian pregnancy it was less a remedy than a routine: something a mother was simply given, every day, without being asked whether she wanted it.

What the research says. Coconut water is naturally isotonic — its electrolyte profile sits close to the body's own fluids, which is why it rehydrates more efficiently than plain water after fluid loss. It carries potassium, magnesium, calcium and natural sugars, and runs mildly alkaline. Pregnancy raises blood volume by forty to fifty per cent, and that expansion has to be built out of fluid and electrolytes. Khoon badhata hai turns out to be a reasonable description of what is happening.

Before you start. Fresh, not packaged — most cartons carry added sugar, and the natural sugars already count if you are managing gestational diabetes. One coconut a day is the practice; several is a meaningful potassium load, which matters if you have a kidney condition or take a potassium-sparing medicine. Drink it soon after opening.

जीरा पानी (Jeera Paani) — Cumin Water for Digestion

The practice. A teaspoon of cumin seeds boiled in 400ml of water for five minutes, strained, cooled to warm and taken once a day after a meal. Jeera paani se pachan theek hota hai. It was the North Indian household answer to a stomach that had gone slow — the heaviness, the gas, the constipation that arrives with pregnancy and overstays.

What the research says. Cumin carries thymol and cuminaldehyde, which stimulate digestive enzyme activity and have mild anti-inflammatory properties. That is a modest, unglamorous mechanism, and modest and unglamorous is exactly right here: this is a comfort measure for a slow gut, not a treatment for anything. In food quantities it is a normal part of Indian cooking and has been throughout Indian pregnancies for centuries.

Before you start. Food quantities only — one cup a day. Cumin supplements, concentrated extracts and cumin essential oil are a different proposition and are not for pregnancy. If constipation is persistent, or you have pain with it, mention it at your next appointment rather than managing it alone.

सौंफ पानी (Saunf Paani) — Fennel Water for Bloating

The practice. A teaspoon of fennel seeds steeped in 250ml of warm water for ten minutes and drunk after meals. Saunf paani pet ko thanda rakhta hai — fennel water keeps the stomach cool. The bowl of saunf at the door of every Indian restaurant is the last surviving trace of a practice that began in the kitchen, not the lobby.

What the research says. Fennel's character comes from anethole, which relaxes the smooth muscle of the digestive tract — which is precisely why it eases bloating and cramping after a meal. Pregnancy already slows the gut considerably, so the discomfort it addresses is close to universal in the second and third trimesters.

Before you start. This one needs the most care of the five. Fennel has mild oestrogen-like activity, so keep strictly to food-level amounts — a cup after dinner — and avoid fennel essential oil and concentrated fennel supplements entirely during pregnancy. If you have a hormone-sensitive condition, or you are already taking a prescribed diuretic, ask your doctor before making it a daily habit.

What does molecular hydrogen do during pregnancy?

Molecular hydrogen is the smallest molecule in existence. Research shows it acts as a selective antioxidant — targeting only the most harmful particles and leaving the helpful ones alone. In published pregnancy studies, mothers who received hydrogen water showed lower blood pressure, better placental function, heavier babies at birth, and babies whose brains showed better protection after birth. What is the recommended starting pH for alkaline water during pregnancy?

Does hydration affect amniotic fluid levels?

Yes, directly. A Cochrane systematic review of four clinical trials found that maternal hydration increased amniotic fluid volume by a mean of 2.01 cm in women with low amniotic fluid (oligohydramnios). Amniotic fluid turns over completely every three hours — the mother's hydration is constantly replenishing it. Consistent daily water intake is one of the most evidence-backed actions a pregnant woman can take for her baby's fluid environment.

Is RO water good for pregnant women?

RO water is clean but mineral-stripped. A reverse-osmosis membrane removes contaminants alongside beneficial minerals like calcium and magnesium — both critical during pregnancy for the baby's skeletal development and the mother's vascular health. If RO water is your only source, mineral supplementation becomes important. What about other brands of ionized water during pregnancy?

The key properties to look for in any ionized water are: dissolved molecular hydrogen (measured in ppb), ORP (the antioxidant charge, measured in mV), and pH at consumption. Are the pregnancy studies on humans or animals?

The pregnancy-specific hydrogen studies (Sakai 2016, Yang 2011, Shi 2018, Imai 2018) are animal models. The Cochrane hydration review is a human systematic review (4 trials, 122 women). The foundational Ohsawa (2007) study established molecular hydrogen's safety in both rodent and human contexts. No large-scale human clinical trial of hydrogen water in pregnant women exists yet.
